The eighth International Conference on the Microscopy of Oxidation was held from 11 to the 13 April 2011. Over 90 delegates attended the meeting, contributing some 62 oral and poster presentations.

The timetable for the conference followed the successful format of previous meetings in the series. There were sessions devoted to fundamental aspects of oxide scale formation in protective oxides such as chromia and alumina, as well as more applied topics, such as the oxidation of coatings and nuclear materials.

A wide range of oxidising environments were also highlighted, including steam and complex atmospheres, producing specific problems such as metal dusting or hot corrosion reactions. A lively poster session was staged in addition to more conventional oral presentations.

A wine reception, sponsored by JEOL (UK) Ltd., was held in the Victoria Gallery and Museum at the University on the first evening of the conference, where we were entertained by a string quartet playing some light classical music. The conference dinner on the second night featured a very different aspect of local culture - a visit to Liverpool Football Club, with a memorable dinner in the Trophy Room.

We are pleased to acknowledge the sponsorship of the conference, especially the student attendance, by the Office of Naval Research Global (Grant No. N62909-11-1-1050).

It is planned to hold the ninth meeting in this series in the Summer of 2014 in Nottingham, UK.
