Photoinduced electron transfer processes of functionalized nanocarbons; fullerenes, nanotubes and graphene

Posted on 14. January, 2014.

To solve the energy demands for a sustainable society, clean solar energy is crucial. Thus, finding methods for efficient light energy conversion is important. Molecular devices employing composites of nanocarbons such as fullerenes, single wall carbon nanotubes and graphene are promising. Light-induced electron-transfer processes of these nanocarbons hybridized with photosensitizers are more favourable than ordinary molecules.

Adsorption of arsenic on pre-treated zeolite at different pH levels

Posted on 14. January, 2014.

Water pollution by arsenic has become one of the biggest problems faced by the sustainable development in several countries. Arsenic contained in drinking water is responsible for many health problems such as lung cancer, bladder cancer, diabetes, muscular weakness, and black foot disease. This study shows the importance of using natural pre-treated zeolites in the adsorption of arsenic in water due to the adsorption percentages that are higher than 90%, controlling the pH in the pre-treatment.

Novel approach to the ultrasonic degradation of polymers: development of a general kinetic equation

Posted on 14. January, 2014.

The general applicability of the common kinetic equations is discussed to develop a general kinetic equation for the ultrasonic degradation of polymers. The common ultrasonic-kinetic equations for polymers are used to fit original data collected from the literature. The fitting accuracy is evaluated by the residual standard deviation. The results indicate that the first-order equation and second-order equations are the most accurate and can replace other kinetic equations.

Collection, isolation, and culture of somatic cells from avian semen

Posted on 14. January, 2014.

Somatic cells recovered from avian semen could be used in chimera formation or cloning of endangered birds; especially important when a genetically unique animal dies and the only viable genetic material available is semen cryopreserved for artificial insemination and in vitro fertilization purposes. Although used in mammalian reproduction, this technology is lacking for avian semen. A minimally invasive technique to conserve avian genetic diversity is described that uses fresh avian semen from domestic chickens as a source of somatic cells, specifically fibroblast-like cells and epithelial cells, for cytological analysis and somatic cell gene banking.

Practical synthesis of neoponkoranol and its related sulfonium salt, an optimised protocol using isopropylidene as an effective protecting group

Posted on 13. January, 2014.

The inhibition of glucosidases is one of the most effective therapeutic approaches to treat diseases such as diabetes, cancers, viral infections and Gaucher’s disease. A practical synthesis of neoponkoranol and its related sulfonium salt as potent α‑glucosidase inhibitors has been developed in which the coupling reaction was optimised by using isopropylidene as an effective protecting group. The coupling yields were dramatically improved in this study from 37% to 87%.
