Paramagnetic species, i.e. those containing unpaired electrons, are involved as reactive intermediates in many of the mechanisms devised for catalytic processes. Since these tend to have an intrinsically fleeting existence, to detect and characterise them is difficult. They may take the form, for example of free radicals, paramagnetic redox sites on catalytic surfaces, or be a part of the essential functional centre of an enzyme.

We live in a molecular world, and it is thus to chemists that we turn to solve the problems of life in that world. Chemistry may not enjoy the perceived glamour that fundamental questions in physics such as the origins of the universe, and the structure of the nucleus, seem to attract, nor the immensely expensive pieces of equipment, the giant telescopes or Large Hadron Collider, but chemistry is universal, and of huge importance to humanity.

Foraging habits of animals are a critical component of their ecology; however, estimates of feeding that rely solely on observation may not detect all of the factors that affect foraging decisions. Importantly, few studies have examined the influence of sociality on dietary regimes in avian species.

Flavanones, 2-phenylchroman-4-ones, belong to the family of flavonoids, many of which are produced as secondary metabolites in the plant kingdom and exhibit a broad spectrum of interesting biological activities. Naringenin (5,7-dihydroxy-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)chroman-4-one) is one of the most abundant flavanones present in grapefruits and citrus fruits. It is well-known for its beneficial health-related properties, including anti-oxidant, anti-cancer, anti-atherogenic, antiinflammatory and anti-proliferative activities.

The Journal of Chemical Research is a monthly journal which has a broad international authorship and publishes research papers and reviews in all branches of experimental chemistry. Established in 1977 as a joint venture by the British, French and German chemical societies it maintains the high standards set by the founding societies.
