The Pale-headed Brush-Finch – once considered extinct – has been downlisted from Critically Endangered to Endangered on the IUCN Red List of globally threatened birds after of more than a decade of sustained conservation action.

Avian Biology Research presents papers from the Conservation and Propagation of Endangered Species of Birds Symposium. Following threats to the existence of the houbara bustard, avian research centres were established in the Arabian Peninsula. Consequently, interspecific chimeras have been developed as a route to re-populating houbaras in their native environments.

Permanganate oxidation is featured heavily in Progress in Reaction Kinetics and Mechanism 36(2). The permanganate oxidation of GABA is a novel method for the synthesis of a valuable pyrrolidone skeleton. Using spectrophotometrical analysis, evidence is also given for delayed autocatalytic behaviour in the permangatae-oxidative catalysed condensation reaction of L-proline to a diketopiperazine.

A Special Issue of Materials at High Temperatures, based on HIDA-5, considers the development of new materials for high temperature plant and the potential for the newer generation of ultra-supercritical power plant. Traditional low alloy steels used in high temperature plant and their integrity are discussed as well as risk-based management issues.
