It is important to examine chemical speciation, transformation and availability of heavy metals in polluted soils under different moisture conditions. The present study was, therefore, undertaken to study the fate of added Ni in different soils polluted with sludge or inorganic salt under field capacity and flooding moisture regimes.

The objective of this study was to determine whether nutrient enrichment enhances the metal tolerance of floating macrophytes, which would therefore enable the growth of floating vegetation in constructed wetlands at metal concentrations that would otherwise inhibit plant viability.

Jingyu Wang and Hari K. Pant, who are both based in New York, consider how the degradation of water quality of the Bronx river may be influenced by an increased flux of phosphorus which is a major nutrient for algal growth.. Algal blooms and oxygen depletion within the river have degraded the water quality, endangered fishing, and limited recreational use.

Avian Biology Research issue 3 is proud to continue its tradition of publishing extracts from the meeting of the Incubation and Fertility Research Group. Factors affecting the production of turkeys, ducks, pheasants, ostriches, and chickens were discussed, thus fulfilling the meeting's objective of reporting research into the incubation and fertility of all avian species.

Science Progress Editor Emeritus Professor David Phillips OBE has taken office as President of the Royal Society of Chemistry until the AGM in july 2012. As previously reported, David won the prestigious Porter Medal in April 2010.
